Welcoming the New Year 2023, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will be staging two concerts for the first two months of this year.

On January 21, it will stage a concert entitled “Happy New Year with Scheherazade,” at Katara Cultural Village, Opera House.

An all-time favorite, Scheherazade is a musical masterpiece with its shimmering music evocative of 1001 Symphonic Tales.

The concert features Karl-Heinz Steffens conducting the Philharmonic to the amazing works of Strauss such as Roses from the South, Egyptian March, Pizzicato Polka, Tritsch Tratsch Polka, Thunder and Lightning Polka and many more.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the New Year with you,” said QPO on its website.

Karl-Heinz Steffens will be the conductor of the concert, while Eleanor Spencer-Harty is the narrator.

The programme features the following musical compositions: Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35; Franz von Suppé: Overture to Leichte Kavallerie (Light Cavalry); Johann Strauss II: Rosen aus dem Süden (Roses from the South) Op. 388, Overture: Zigeunerbaron (Gypsy Bar), Pizzicato Polka; Émile Waldteufel: Estudiantina; Johann Strauss II: Egyptischer Marsch (Egyptian March) Op. 335, Tritsch – Tratsch Polka, Op. 214, and Unter Donner und Blitz (Thunder and Lightning Polka) Op. 324.

The following month, it will hold a concert entitled “Frank Sinatra and Friends” on February 4, at Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif.

In a toe tapping evening celebrating Ol’ Blue Eyes and others from the big band and swing era, Tom Gaebel takes on Frank Sinatra’s greatest hits backed by special musical guests and the incredible Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

Tom Gaebel is a German singer and leader of a big band named after himself, and is a well-known vocalist known for his swinging brand of retro pop and jazz.

The concert will feature 16 songs including Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Happy Birthday, Ol’ Blues Eyes, Love and Marriage, Something Stupid, Meet the Rat Pack, I Get Kick Out Of You, Ol’ Man River “Show Boat”, Mack the Knife, Fly Me To The Moon, Bossa Nova Medley, Strangers In The Night, Granada, It Was A Very Good Year, That’s Life, and New York, New York.

“Frank Sinatra and Friends” performers include: Andreas Weiser as the conductor; Tom Gaebel as Frank Sinatra;  Jerry Lu, piano;  Stephan Ray, double bass;  Niklas Walter, drum;  Jan Schneider, trumpet; and  Marcus Bartelt, saxophone.

For those interested to watch the concerts, tickets are available via QPO’s website.
