Based in 1978, The Los Angeles Homosexual Freedom Band (GFBLA) has seen its share of tumult. It started as a marching band known as The Nice American Yankee Band, “GAY,” as printed on their bass drum. They snuck their method into parades that wouldn’t have in any other case welcomed them, generally going through backlash.
Inventive Director Joseph Vranas shares, “There have been a couple of anecdotes about probably some large brick throwing or some insults thrown in direction of the band as they performed within the parades.”
However, because the saying goes, the band performed on, even after they misplaced 90% of their firm within the early days of the AIDS disaster.
Now after greater than 40 years of constructing music, GFBLA’s group of volunteer and novice musicians are focusing a brand new program of music on causes necessary to them. On Sunday, November 13, they are going to be taking part in unique songs across the themes of local weather change, civil rights, gender equality, and extra. There may also be a pre-show dialogue with the viewers and musicians.
Vranas says the theme is that of a watchman, holding a lightweight within the evening. “We’re shining a lightweight on these completely different causes. In our program, we spotlight completely different organizations that help these causes. And we’ll focus on what the composers are reaching of their music, and the way these representations are manifesting within the items.”
