Move over Grime and Dubstep, Gen Zs are getting their musical inspirations from artists such as Kate Bush, ABBA and Amy Winehouse, according to research by Samsung StemDrop.

As well as contemporary artists like Eminem (28 percent) who topped the poll, Drake (27 percent), and Rihanna (26 percent), youngsters are feeling musically inspired by ABBA (13 percent), the Beatles (12 percent), Fleetwood Mac (eight percent) and David Bowie (eight percent).

Kate Bush (seven percent) also made the definitive list of 30 musical inspirations, no doubt due to her 1985 release, Running up that Hill, becoming a major hit again after featuring in season 4 of Stranger Things.

Overall, 45 percent of the 1,000 16 – 25 year-olds surveyed, said older artists are making a retro comeback.

Annika Bizon from Samsung:

“We are committed to empowering creative expression through our smartphone technology and are really excited to be leading the way in redefining how music is being made.”

Almost half (44 percent) find their musical inspiration on social media (44 percent), while 43 percent turn to entertainment platforms, such as TikTok – and playlists on music streaming sites (42 percent). When it comes to their favourite music genre, 55 percent admit that pop is their go-to, followed by rap (50 percent), hip hop (48 percent) and R&B (36 percent).

A quarter (22 percent) prefer rock and grime (21 percent), while one in ten (11 percent) say that classical is their favourite genre. Of the young Britons surveyed, nearly three-quarters (71 percent) say they couldn’t live without music, listening for an average of 3 hours a day.

One in three (31 percent) dream of being a music star on sites like TikTok, while a further third (27 percent) say they are already uploading music online.

One in four (24 percent) don’t have access to the right technology to be a music creator, even though a sixth (15 percent) admit to being intrigued about the production process.

Not musical enough (23 percent), too nerve wracking (21 percent) and don’t have the time (20 percent) are also seen as barriers to creating music.

A sixth (18 percent) admit that they lack inspiration, while one in six (16 percent) don’t think anyone else would like their music. 15 percent say there isn’t enough advice out there on how to create music.

It’s no surprise then that one in three (38 percent) would jump at the chance to learn more about making and sharing their own music online.

Samsung has partnered with TikTok to launch StemDrop. A new format for recording and mixing music on TikTok.
