Grammy Award winners Los Lobos to play at the Rio
On Dec. 31, from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., American rock band Los Lobos will play at the Rio Theatre.
The band rose to international fame with their cover of the Ritchie Valens song “La Bamba” in 1987. Los Lobos has won four Grammy Awards and was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Formal gala with local band Space Heater
On Dec. 30 at 9 p.m., Santa Cruz funk band Space Heater will usher in the new year at Moe’s Alley’s Winter Formal Gala.
The formal gala invites attendees to dress in their finest, offering a fun opportunity to dress up. Space Heater plays funk that they promise to be “cosmic jams” that will land listeners on the dance floor.

Marty O’Reilly, Quinn DeVeaux play New Year’s Eve
On Dec. 31 at 9 p.m., Americana guitarist and singer Marty O’Reilly will perform with blues singer Quinn DeVeaux at Moe’s Alley’s Roaring Twenties-themed New Year’s Eve party.
Marty O’Reilly plays a unique combination of blues, folk and soul. His passion clearly comes through in his live performances; he describes how he enters a trance of music until he leaves the stage exhausted with a delighted audience.

Disco ABBA dance party rings in new year at the Catalyst
On Dec. 31, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., the Catalyst will host the Gimme Gimme Disco: A Dance Party Inspired by ABBA.
Attendees will ring in the new year with furious dancing to the world famous ABBA. ABBA, one of the most famous and successful music groups of all time, is a pop-rock and disco group that has produced incredibly danceable songs.

Mushroom enthusiasts will love community science at Fungus Fair
For any fungus enthusiast, the Santa Cruz Fungus Fair from Jan. 1 through Jan. 16 represents an excellent chance to celebrate the mushrooms of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The Fungus Fair is a focused community science effort aiming to observe much of Santa Cruz’s fungal biodiversity. Participants will submit observations to the project page at iNaturalist (following the project guidelines), allowing them to share their discoveries with the community.

Fun exhibits to learn history at San Lorenzo Valley Museum
The San Lorenzo Valley Museum recently opened its “Convivial Conveyances Holiday Exhibition.”
The “Convivial Conveyances Holiday Exhibition” is a look at festive transportation of all kinds, from horse-drawn carriages to trains. Other exhibits such as “Categorically Cats” (about the felines of the Santa Cruz Mountains) and “Footpaths to the Superhighway” (about the history of paths and connections in Scotts Valley) are located at the museum’s Felton location. Both locations provide exhibits that give an entertaining look at local history for kids and families.
